“max’s kansas city was an oasis, and nobody there wanted a record of what they were doing.” lucky for us there is a record, and it will be on display at two exhibitions – at the steven kasher gallery, and (focusing on max’s artist regulars) the loretta howard gallery. both galleries located in chelsea launch their exhibits on september 15. this late bloomer will be there to catch a glimpse of patti smith and robert mapplethorpe, if only in a photograph.

“i see myself as a combination of hausfrau, artist and tomboy.”

from architectural digest

only in new york does a photo like this exist in real life.

from the sartorialist

one year ago today…i got my hair done, slid into a white dress, sipped champagne, prayed for sun, re-read my vows, united with frank for the first time, snapped hundreds of photos, felt drops of rain in the field, wondered when the rabbi was going to show up, reapplied my lipstick, signed the ketubah, bawled at the first note of “in a sentimental mood,” walked down the aisle (still bawling), listened to the most beautiful vows ever written, said “i do,” kissed my groom, relaxed in the silo with my husband, learned we made the new york times, attended our cocktail hour (trying not to miss a single appetizer), dined on phenomenal food, listened to beautiful words by friends and family, bussed back to the castle, bribed the bartender to stay open, smiled and smiled and smiled.

the photo exhibit, younger than i’ll be, depicts new york in the 80′s and early 90′s, encompassing the feeling of being young in the city back when manhattan could still feel dangerous.

curator skye parrot:
“being young here was a singular experience–riding the subways, walking everywhere, phone booths, beepers, sitting on stoops, the feeling that you owned everything. part of that was just the joy and omnipotence of adolescence. part of it is the overwhelming experience of coming into one’s own in a place as exceptional as new york.”

exhibit runs through may 23 at bam.

a recently bought chambray shirt from madewell (or workshirt as they call it) has become one of my new favorite pieces. it’s great to wear casually with jeans or leggings, but i also like to spice it up by pairing it with a sequined mini. as i was browsing stockholm street style, i found some great examples of glamming up denim. i guess it doesn’t hurt to be drop dead gorgeous either – these chicklets could make a paper bag ravishing.

this photograph by cade martin is

stunning, precious, heartbreaking…

i could go on if i had the words

‘some things words cannot describe’ is a quote from martin’s website

happy anniversary franko!

so it is quoted on my new favorite food site. sprouted kitchen is the creation of a husband and wife team – she cooks, he takes the photos. but to say that he takes photos is an understatement. his photographs are stunning – and i agree with his wife, hugh is an ‘image making mastermind.’ to see more of his work, go here.

i am totally inspired by this website and can’t wait to try some of the recipes. if it tastes as good as it looks, i’m in for quite a treat.

backyard bill simply states that it features stylish folks in their own clothes. it’s similar to the sartorialist, however it’s more catskills than milan.

some photos are accompanied by a short questionnaire:

Where did you grow up?
Where did you live?
What is your personal soundtrack at the moment?
Your star sign?
Who is your style icon?
What do you do or what would you like to do when you grow up?

i love this photograph by cedric bihr.
the contrast of her snow white hair and the turquoise wall is striking.
she looks happy and cozy.

photographs by william cronon, studier of american environmental history and the history of the american west. he is a professor at the university of wisconsin-madison, where i had the privilege of taking one of his classes and was recently featured as a commentator on ken burns’ the natural park series. for more stunning photographs – from wisconsin to iceland, go here.

“you are what you eat” is a series of portraits documenting the content of refrigerators in homes across america. each fridge is photographed as is. below are contrasting refrigerators – one belonging to a bartender, the other a middle school teacher (both from san antonio). i’ll let you match up.

i never understood the power of inspiration boards until my husband and i noticed how similar our apartment resembled the magazine tears of interiors that he had collected. as we have begun to dream of a getaway home in the catskills, an inspiration board might just bring it to life. i think this photograph by mark scott will be the centerpiece. cozy, warm and inviting, i’m putting it out there right now. yes, publish post.

when you’re growing out your hair, there comes a point where suddenly out of nowhere, it’s “really long”. my point happened last month and my friends and colleagues keep saying: your hair is “really long”. granted i work for a hair company, which heightens the importance of the topic. but it’s true, my hair is long and i need to find a way to keep the length in a fresh way.

i love looking at hair references and imagining what my own hair could be. often the looks aren’t realistic for me and i find myself saying, “if i we’re brave, i would do that,” or “if i had light hair, i would bleach it platinum.” i came across a photograph of daisy lowe on garance dore who’s do, i believe requires minimum courage and might just suit me. i’m going to bring it to my stylist for a professional opinion, but i think this might be just what i need. red leopord hot pants on the other hand…
